Lockheed L-1011 TriStar 500 - General Design
The L-1011-500 TriStar was a three-engine widebody aircraft. Announced in November 1975, this model first flew in 16 October 1978. It was designed by Lockheed as a true long-range aircraft with a shortened fuselage with less 4.1 m in comparison with standard TriStars. A larger wingspan and active ailerons provided a higher MTOW. Other design changes included more powerful Rolls-Royce engines (50,000 lbs), a noise-reducing Frisbee fairing (named after the Lockheed engineer Lloyd Frisbee) below the center engine intake, shorter wing-to-fuselage fairings, digital autopilot and the FMS. The retractable tailskid installed on previous versions was removed since the fuselage length is shorter. The L-1011-500 didn't have the lower galley - to allow for more cargo space - and the front cargo door also was redesigned to be larger. Only fifty L-1011-500 were built until the end of production, in 1983. Follow the link for detailed cockpit diagrams.
